GBC's Response to COVID-19

December 10, 2020

Our plan and hope is to continue on the path toward the time when we can have “normal” meetings together for worship and ministry.  Here are some of the next steps:

Outdoor worship at 11AM will continue through the end of December (weather permitting).  On January 3, we will return to having three indoor worship services on Sunday morning at 8:15AM, 9:40AM and 11:05AM in addition to our Saturday 5:30PM service. Like our current worship services, seating will be socially distanced and reservations will be required to help ensure we have enough seats available (see our Indoor page for reservation links and more information). After each worship service, we will clear the room quickly so that it can be disinfected prior to the next service.  We plan to set up a “heated” gathering area in the parking lot for before and after service fellowship. We will add additional services as needed to accommodate all who want to attend in-person worship services.

The weekly worship service will continue to be pre-recorded and will be made available for those who choose to participate from home on Sunday morning (you can watch at any time after 6 AM).

We plan to have pre-school and elementary classes for children (through fifth grade) at 9:40 AM starting on January 3. The number of classes and other details are still being developed depending on teacher availability, demand, etc. More information will be available next week.

The focus of Student Ministry groups will continue to be Sunday Night Grace which meets in homes and at church on Sunday night. There will also be a Foundations Class in the Fellowship Hall for those students who are not participating in Sunday Night Grace starting on Jan 3 at 9:40AM

We will continue to have Adult small groups that meet on-line, in homes, and at the church.

As we have said from the beginning an important part of this journey was “Flexibility to a changing situation” so stay tuned to additional changes and updates provided in the News From Grace email and on this page on our website.

Pastor Tim, the staff, and Ministry Council met for several hours this week to discuss the changing situation and our response to restrictions on meeting related to COVID-19.  Several things have changed. First, the COVID infection rate, positivity rate, and death rate continue to increase in our country, state, and in Prince William County. Second, a ZOOM meeting that our NorthStar Association had last week with NOVA churches and a local law firm (the same firm that our church has used for years) helped clarify the meaning of the most recent amended VA Executive Order and how these mandates relate to our church.  Finally, the staff and the Ministry Council has spent time looking at what the Bible says that would help us discern the best path ahead.  In particular, we looked at the book of Daniel and examined how Daniel and the Jewish exiles responded to a pagan government, asking them to change their names, their diets, and ultimately to worship idols. We also considered whether the mandates from the state of VA would have a significant impact on those who wished to worship and meet at our church or if they were in the category of inconvenience and discomfort that needs to be accepted for a season.

Based on the above considerations, we are asking that all who attend indoor services and other meetings wear masks for the foreseeable future (even when seated). This will apply to all our indoor meetings including Saturday and Sunday Worship services, Christmas Eve Services, Adult, Student, and Children’s small group meetings/classes, MOPS meetings, Wednesday Night Prayer, and Sunday Night Grace.  If you have questions about any of these changes, contact Pastor Kirk ( ) or a member of the Ministry Council and we will do our best to answer them.  Also, please continue to pray for our church as we seek to navigate this difficult season in a way that honors God and the needs of our brothers and sisters in Christ.

  • Sunday Outside Worship moves to 11:00AM on the field on November 1. For more information go to the Worship Outside page.
  • Sunday Inside Worship time moves to 9:30AM on Sunday, November 1.  For more information go to the Worship Indoors page.
  • On-line Worship will be streamed at 9:30AM and 11:00AM on Sunday morning beginning November 1.  .
October 13, 2020

With more flexibility now, we are updating our guidelines for ministry inside and outside the church.  This of course could require future adjustment for many reasons as we enter the winter season.

Worship Indoors
We plan to start our Saturday service again on October 31 at 5:30PM with at least one small group meeting on campus after the service. Childcare will also be provided.

As the weather gets colder, we anticipate transitioning to our previous normal service times at 8:15AM, 9:40AM, and 11:05AM.  We will add additional services as needed, possibly at other times of the day or week to accommodate all who want to attend in person.

Our “socially distanced” seating capacity for indoor worship is about 120.  We want to make sure we have enough room for those who desire to attend, so we will ask people to make a “reservation” for the service they want to attend through our website. Other plans include:

  • Seating pre-arranged in groups to accommodate families, couples, and individuals
  • A gathering area in the parking lot before and after services (worshipers will be asked to leave the building after each service so that it can be cleaned and sanitized for the next service)
  • Not passing things around (we will have alternatives for communion elements, etc. and discontinue bulletins, shared Bibles and pens for the time being)
  • Coffee service will be put on hold

Small Groups and Other Ministry Activities
Most of our small groups are meeting online and this will continue indefinitely. Some small groups are beginning to meet in person. More information on small groups can be found here

We have arranged the classrooms to better accommodate socially distant meetings.

Please contact Margaret Miller at to schedule a group or meeting. For groups using these rooms, we ask that they:

  • "Social Distance"
  • Serve food safely
  • Sanitize surfaces when done

June 10, 2020

Over this season we have been grateful for God’s provision in many ways.  One is that many of our ministries and ability to prepare for ministry has been able to continue – often aided by technology and accomplished in different ways.  These include:

  • Worship services on Youtube and Facebook
  • Hispanic services and classes
  • Daily devotionals from Pastor Tim
  • Adult Small Groups meeting online (90%)
  • Student Small Groups meeting (All)
  • Preaching and Teaching classes (3/week)
  • Preschool Story Time
  • Elementary Bible Lesson
  • Awana Verse Review
  • Grace Student Weekly Lesson
  • Guitar Class
  • Next Steps Meetings
  • MOPS Meetings
  • AHG and TL Group Meetings
  • Ministry team supporting seniors, first responders and homeless
  • Benevolence support to church and community
  • Homeless meals delivered weekly
  • ACTS food donations
  • Financial support to local, state and international ministries
  • Cleaning, sanitizing, painting, and updating many areas of our facility
  • Ministry Planning/Budgeting for Ministry next fall
  • And many others…

We are glad too that the COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in our area are decreasing, leading to a lessening of restrictions on us gathering together in person. The Staff and Ministry Council are making plans to respond to the changes and updates to the guidance and direction from state and local officials.  We are coordinating and exchanging information with our Small Group and Ministry Leaders, other local churches, and the Northstar Association. This page reflects our current plans – however, it’s almost certain that some of these will change as new information and guidance becomes available. We will continue to use our weekly News from Grace email (sign up here) and our website to communicate changes and updates.

Currently, we are limited to 50% of capacity for our worship gatherings, however, the requirement to social distance is what really restricts our seating/gathering capacity.  This month we are excited to regather for in-person worship outdoors and expect to transition to indoor services as the weather gets warmer this summer. Our current understanding is that the requirement to social distance also limits the ability to do in-person ministry activities with children.  We have been able to do children's ministry activities in a few special cases where children remain with their families. Social distancing also restricts our adult small groups (and other Adult Ministries) from using all but a few of our larger rooms.  Please see below for more information and details on plans for the near future.

Worship Online
We plan to continue online worship services indefinitely. Currently, this is at 5:30PM on Saturday (GBC Saturday Night group) and 10AM Sunday, on Facebook (GraceBaptist VA) or YouTube ( Grace Baptist Church - Woodbridge, VA). The Sermon Audio will be available on the website Sunday afternoon click here. Our worship music, testimonies, and Pastor Tim’s sermon are recorded on the Tuesday prior to each weekend.  At some time in the future, we may transition to “live” on-line services that are broadcast at the same time as our in-person worship.

Worship Outdoors
We are excited that outdoor worship together will begin on June 14.  The Worship Outside page on our website has all the details.

Worship Indoors
As current conditions improve, we plan to transition to indoor worship services when the weather gets warmer. Our “socially distanced” seating capacity for indoor worship is about 120.  We want to make sure we have enough room for those who desire to attend, so we will ask people to make a “reservation” for the service they want to attend through our website. Other plans include:

  • Saturday Evening and Sunday Morning Contemporary Service and a Sunday Morning Traditional Service. We will add additional services as needed, possibly at other times of the day or week to accommodate all who want to attend in person.
  • Seating pre-arranged in groups to accommodate families, couples, and individuals
  • A gathering area in the parking lot before and after services (worshipers will be asked to leave the building after each service so that it can be cleaned and sanitized for the next service)
  • Not passing things around (we will have alternatives for connect cards, communion elements, etc. and discontinue bulletins, shared Bibles and pens for the time being)
  • Coffee service will be put on hold
  • Because of the reasons cited above, Adult and Student Small Groups, Children’s Classes, and Childcare will not be held when we meet for Worship.

Small Groups and Other Ministry Activities
Most of our small groups are meeting online and this will continue indefinitely. More information on small groups can be found here.

We do have a few rooms that will accommodate adult meetings “socially distanced” These rooms can be used:

  • B105 – 14 people
  • B112 – 10 people
  • B113 – 10 people
  • B125 – 30 people in "around the room meeting" format with people seated on the walls
  • Chilton - 20 people in "around the room meeting" format with people seated on the walls

Connect Card - Prayers and Gratitude
The apostle encouraged us in Philippians to: "not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God."  We will continue to have a regular time of prayer for the needs of the body.  We now have a digital Connect Card page where you can submit prayers and gratitude.
